Little River Canyon
The only river to start atop a mountain, the Little River gashes its way across Lookout Mountain. Beginning with a 60 foot drop at the Falls, it cuts 600 feet deep into the sandstone cap forming one of the wildest, most mysterious places in the deep south. It was home to aboriginal people for thousands of years and explored by a prince 300 years before Columbus. It was an obstacle for conquistadors and a reason for a Union General to burn Atlanta. It has been the home to chimpanzees, cheetahs, and alligators. Murderous women have dumped bodies and ghostly howls can be heard emanating from the bowels of the gash just below its impetus. The canyon is steeped in lore and legend. As with any tale, there is always at least a hint of truth.
